As a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals, the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center participates in the CASPR computer matching service for residency applicants.

A list of applicants is compiled at the offices of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatry Medicine (AACPM) and forwarded to the residency program in November of each year.

Applicants are screened on the basis of GPA, National Board passage, clinical evaluations, letters of recommendation, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, research experience and well-rounded background.

An invitation for an interview at one of the centralized regional interview programs (CRIPS) is extended to a number of qualified applicants. In 2002, 87 applications were received for the two entry-level positions. Thirty-six applicants were offered an interview.

Following interviews, the selection process is conducted with input from all VA podiatric attendings and residents. The preferred applicants are ranked and the ranking is submitted to CASPR for the match process, with the outcome announced in early March.

Those candidates matched to the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center Podiatry Residency Program are extended a formal offer and contract to participate as residents in our three-year program. In each of the last three years, the program matched with our top two applicants.
