CTHVAMC News Release - Veterans Medical Leadership Council Presents $20,000 to VA Medical Center - PHOENIX - The Veterans Medical Leadership Council (VMLC), a group of military veteran business and civic leaders, dedicated to Veterans causes presented a check for $20,000 to the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center today, which will be used to help aging, disabled and other patients of the medical center. (12/21/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - VA Medical Center Serves up Holiday Tradition with a Flock of Cornish Hens - PHOENIX - Think cooking an elegant holiday meal for all your family or friends is a daunting task? Just wait until you hear this... It will take about two dozen staff at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center to cook and serve a traditional dinner of Cornish game hens and all the trimmings - including dressing, cranberry salad and pecan pie - to about 150 patients, plus some of their family members on Christmas Day. Brown, Sr., knows he is lucky to be alive, having survived the sinking of the USS Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1941. More than 400 men died when the battleship capsized. (11/30/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Asthma Expert Offers Advice for Safeguarding Health on High Pollution Days - PHOENIX - As High Pollution Advisories (HPAs) become more common during winter months in the Valley, many people - especially children, the elderly, people with lung or heart conditions, and people who are very active outdoors - need to know how to protect themselves against the harmful effects of poor air quality. (11/30/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Honoring Veterans with Entry in the 2006 APS Electric Light Parade - PHOENIX - Four "human" toy soldiers, each sporting uniforms adorned with hundreds of tiny electric lights will ride down Central Avenue on the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center float, as part of the 2006 APS Electric Light Parade on Saturday, December 2. The float, an American Eagle covered with more than 50,000 red, white and blue lights, will highlight the V.A. Medical Center's 55-year "Tradition of Honoring Our Veterans" through its mission of providing top-quality medical care and related services. (11/28/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Tenth Annual Veterans Day Parade - PHOENIX - This year's parade celebrates all veterans with the theme, "America's Veterans, Heroes Through the Decades". The VA Veterans Day Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 11th and runs northbound from the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center on 7th Street and Montectio, westbound on Camelback, then northbound on Central Avenue to North Phoenix Baptist Church. (11/07/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - VAMC Staff Builds Float for one of Nation's Top Veterans Day Parades - PHOENIX - Several VA employees will be decorating the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center (CTHVAMC) float for the 10th Annual VA Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 4, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Float decorating will take place outside of Building 21, on the northeast corner of the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center grounds, near Central High School. (11/01/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - VA Veterans Day Parade Features Canine Entry to Honor "War Dogs" - PHOENIX - Some veterans are walking to honor friends who served with them in Vietnam, remembering that many did not come home. Others are walking to honor the families who, during World War II, gave their dogs to the U.S. military to help in the war effort. Little did they know that initiative would start a program that proved the versatility and dedication of canines to serve in combat.

Ms. United States 2006, Kayla Downs, and Brent Phillips, who was seriously wounded in Iraq while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps, will attend to help recognize the essay contest winners. Kilamanjaro - PHOENIX - Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon will present Uhuru Ascent (pronounced a-hoo-roo, which is Swahili for "freedom") mountain climbers with an official state of Arizona flag to take with them on their Mt. Kilimanjaro expedition in August.
(07/28/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Korean War Veteran Recalls Experiences on Cease Fire Anniversary - PHOENIX - Silver Star Recipient Nick Gervase will share his reflections of his service during the Korean War, on July 27th. It was on that day in 1953 that the cease fire was signed. Gervase will be displaying his scrapbook, a grenade, knife and rifle used during the conflict and other memorabilia. (07/26/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - VA Medical Center Taps Local Vets for Parade - PHOENIX - The 2006 Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center Veterans Day Parade will honor all of America's veterans, with a focus on those who served in the Korean War (1950-1953), which has been called "the forgotten war." But with the rattling of sabers by North Korea and its recent missile tests, many Americans are likely to recall that conflict, which ended on July 27, 1953, with no formal peace treaty. (07/24/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Valley Vet Competes in National Veterans Wheelchair Games - PHOENIX - Mark Peterson knows it is hot here in July, so when the chance to compete in the VA's National Veterans Wheelchair Games in a cooler climate came to him he took it. Peterson will now be among more than 500 veterans with disabilities who will compete in the Games, being held July 3 through 8 in Anchorage, Alaska. (06/27/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Rapid HIV Testing Helps Patients Learn Results Quickly - PHOENIX - The Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center (CTHVAMC) is offering a rapid test for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that allows patients to get test results back within an hour, compared with a wait time of up to two weeks for the standard HIV test. (06/26/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - VA Researcher Working on Unique Therapy for Stroke Patients - PHOENIX - The internet could become a powerful new tool in treating stroke patients with communication deficits and allow them to regain more of their independence, thanks to the work of researchers at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix on Wednesday, May 17 around 4:30 p.m., entering Steele Indian School Park, adjacent to the Medical Center, at Third Street and Indian School Road in Phoenix. The Ahwatukee resident was recently named "Volunteer of the Year" at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix. Small print on the prescription labels and pill bottles that look alike can lead to several concerning outcomes including confusion, not taking medication or taking the wrong dosage. (04/17/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - Harleys Roll Onto VA Medical Center Campus - PHOENIX - The bikes are being brought to the medical center courtesy of Verl Smith Racing for VETS, of Rainier, Ore. Joining Smith are racers Robbie McCaa and Hyper "Liz" from Anaheim, Calif., and Mary Lou Brew from Raleigh, N.C. The racers are in Phoenix for the AHDRA races at Firebird International Raceway on April 8 and 9. Verl "Smitty" Smith heads a nonprofit organization, Veterans Educating Towards Survivial (VETS). Believing that racing Harleys is "an American Dream," Smith's group helps train veterans to work on racing teams. He returned home in August 2003. (01/31/2006) CTHVAMC News Release - New Patient Beds at VA Medical Center Make Hospital Stays Safer - PHOENIX - Injuries due to falls are the leading cause of adverse events at hospitals, and a major safety issue for all older Americans. To help prevent such injuries, the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix has begun using "smart beds" that can alert staff to patient movements, thus helping to prevent falls. The "smart beds" can also reduce the possibility of staff injuries associated with moving patients, via their enhanced technology.
