VA Provides Skin Cancer Screenings and Sunscreen Tips for LPGA Golfers
Prevention Makes Sense in the Arizona Sun
Dr. Selma Targovnik, a Dermatologist at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix will be amongst one of two female physicians who will be screening members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) to ensure they don’t have any pre-cancerous lesions or actual skin cancer before they take to the Arizona sun this weekend. In addition Dr. Targovnik will spend time with the ladies to provide them with one-on-one personal information about skin cancer prevention, especially as it relates to their profession, which requires constant sun exposure.
What will some of her pointers be?
- Use sunscreen with at least a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30
- Try to use sunscreens with physical blockers such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
- Wear hats with a four-inch brim to help cover most of the face and neck
- Wear clothes with SPF 30 built right in. Unfortunately most clothing is about an SPF of 6 and doesn’t provide full spectrum prevention
Dr. Targovnik will be at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, March 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The club is located at 8000 E. Club Village at Superstition Mountain. Phone is (480) 983-3200.
Although this screening is not for the general public and will only apply to LPGA golfers, skin cancer screening for the golf viewing public will be available on Saturday and Sunday March 24-25 during the tournament.
