Disabled Marine Corps Veteran, from Operation Iraqi Freedom, Will Get the Camaro of His Dreams, this Sunday March 2 at 2 p.m. in a Special Presentation
Marine Corps Corporal Jarred Foster, of Mesa, is a 24 year-old Iraq war veteran, who was severely wounded while fighting in Iraq. Due to a "friendly fire" incident, he took a 50 caliber round through his lower back. No one thought he would survive. The incident left him with a lifetime spinal cord disability.
When he returned home, he needed something to alter his focus from the severe pain and readjustment. So he bought what can best be described as nothing more than the shell of a 1968 Camaro Coupe. His hope was to build a nice car for himself, but his injuries make it difficult to do so.
"He's been trying to do as much as he can on his project—sandblasting, wire brushing parts, clean-up, etc. But for Jarred it's some of the other aspects of working on a car that are a problem, such as leaning, crawling underneath, working under the dash, etc." says John Bauler, President of the First Generation Camaro Club in Phoenix. That's when the club stepped in.
Bauler quickly realized that Foster wouldn't be able to refurbish his dream car anytime soon. It was then that Bauler and his club decided to intervene. Together they garnered parts, volunteered their labor and time and on Sunday USMC Corporal Foster will receive his beautifully restored 1968 Camaro Coupe in a surprise presentation. The event will take place March 2 at 2 p.m. at the First Generation Camaro's of Arizona Car Show, called "Project Iraqi Veteran" at the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at 2017 N. Greenfield Road.
"These young men and women are doing the job we've asked them to do. Their service gives me my freedom and I am grateful for that. We can't give them enough, and this car is just one way of saying thank you."
Corporal Foster is unaware of the contribution and the Club is excited about the "surprise unveiling". Foster is a VA patient and served as a Veteran Grand Marshal in the VA Veterans Day Parade in 2005.
