PHOENIX - Veterans at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center are not being forgotten during the holiday season, thanks to several Valley organizations and volunteer groups.

Many of these veterans are elderly or disabled patients who are residents of the VA Medical Center's Nursing Home Care Unit (NHCU). Hospitalized patients also will enjoy gifts and visits from community volunteers.

Media opportunities at the VA Medical Center during December include:

  • Dec. 11, 12:30 p.m. - Jewish War Veterans will distribute gifts in the NHCU
  • Dec. 11, 1:30 p.m. - North Phoenix Baptist Church Choir will sing for NHCU veterans 
  • Dec. 13, 10 a.m. - USAA, a financial services company for active duty military and dependents, will distribute gifts in the NHCU
  • Dec. 14, 2:30 p.m. - The Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders will visit with veterans and sign posters in the NHCU Dining Room
  • Dec. 14, 3 p.m. - Students from Northwest Christian School in North Phoenix (43rd Avenue and West Bell Road) will deliver gift cards to residents of the NHCU
  • Dec. 15, 10 a.m. - Girl Scouts from troops in Mesa will deliver stockings, ornaments and cards that they have made to veterans in the NHCU
  • Dec. 19, 1:30 p.m. - The Salvation Army Band will perform in the NHCU Dining Room
  • Dec. 20, 1 p.m. - VA Voluntary Services Committee, which includes representatives of several community organizations, will deliver gifts, accompanied by the VA Voices, a group of VA Medical Center employees and volunteers who bring the gift of song, to patients in the hospital and NHCU
  • Dec. 24, 4 p.m. - Operation Stocking Stuffer, a group that sends packages overseas to deployed military as well as giving to veterans locally, will distribute gifts starting in the NHCU
