In order to accommodate the 2007 VA Veterans Day Parade on Monday, November 12, the following is a list of street closures and times that will help make way for the parade route:

  • 7th Street 8 a.m.: soft closure of two northbound lanes from Indian School to Camelback.
  • Central Avenue: Closure 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Bethany Home Road to Mariposa Street; limited to local access at Indian School Road for northbound traffic up to Mariposa Street.
  • Camelback Road: Closure 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from 3rd Avenue to 8th Place; limited to local access at 7th Avenue for eastbound traffic up to 1st Avenue; limited to local access at 12th Street for westbound traffic up to 8th Street.
  • Missouri Street: Closure 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from 3rd Avenue to 1st Street; limited to local access at 7th Avenue for eastbound traffic up to 1st Avenue; limited to local access at 7th Street for westbound traffic to 1st Street.
  • 7th Street: Closure 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Indian School Road to Pasadena Avenue; limited to local access at Bethany Home Road for southbound traffic up to 300 ft. north of Camelback Road.
  • Highland Avenue: Limited to local access at 12th Street for westbound traffic to 8th Street.

The parade will take a zigzag route, heading north on Seventh Street from Montecito to Camelback, turning west on Camelback to Central Avenue, and then turning north on Central up to Montebello, just north of Bethany Home Road, where it will destage at the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

Parade Grand Marshals include Congressional Medal of Honor recipients Silvestre Herrera and Fred Ferguson, who also is representing veterans of the Vietnam War. Other Vietnam Veteran Grand Marshals are: David Althoff, Rita Brock-Perini, Michael Grossman, Len Kirschner and Sue Wudy. Hearts of Valor Veteran Grand Marshals, representing veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, are Robert Bartlett, Eric Castro, Tim Hernandez and Brent Phillips. The Business Community Grand Marshal is Thom Meaker, who also served in the Vietnam and received the Purple Heart.

The VA Medical Center’s Veterans Day Parade began in 1997 with 50 entries and approximately 10,000 people on the streets.  The Parade is designed to help commemorate and honor our veterans and to educate Americans about the service and sacrifices our veterans have made to protect our freedoms.

MEDIA PLEASE NOTE:  The parade set-up begins at 5:30 a.m. on medical center grounds.  There are plenty of opportunities for live shots and live remotes throughout the morning.  Just call Pat Impiccini at 480-496-9237 for live shot coordination.
