Miss United States 2006 to Hand Out Flags and Visit with Patients at VA Medical Center on Flag Day
June 14 is the 230th Anniversary of the Stars and Stripes
PHOENIX - Miss United States 2006, Kayla Downs, will hand out flags to in-patients of the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center on June 14, in celebration of Flag Day.
Media should meet in the 7th Street lobby of the VA Medical Center before 10 a.m., when Ms. Downs will begin distributing flags to veterans on the medical wards.
June 14 is the national observance of Flag Day, and is the 230th anniversary of the creation of the American flag. The first national recognition of Flag Day occurred on June 14, 1877, but Congress didn't make the observance permanent until 1949.
Downs, who is from Peoria, has made raising support for our military a priority. She has been honored by the USS Pinckney Naval ship and asked to 'adopt' their ship. She attended graduations and their deployment in the spring of 2007. Downs is also organizing a pen-pal program between soldiers of the Pinckney and her pageant sisters.
